$300K in Funding Launches Personal Care Brand onto Target Shelves

Funding Received:
$300,000
The Challenge
Pitching their line of girls personal care products to Target® over a video call was not how they imagined the big moment. But for Sadie and Abby Bowler, two Utah sisters who co-founded SadieB Personal Care in 2019, the moment arrived much earlier than expected. In fact, they didn’t know where they’d find the funding to make good on their good fortune.
The Bowler sisters had worked through the pandemic, pouring themselves into research and development of personal care formulas and fragrances made with high-quality ingredients. They were on a mission to empower girls and young women by creating a public benefit corporation, a brand, and a line of products—for girls, by girls—advocating for physical and mental hygiene. Along the way, they networked with women leaders to connect, learn and grow. A wise choice that would later prove central to their success.
In 2022, SadieB officially launched its e-commerce website and the co-founders focused energy on their growth strategy of finding brick-and-mortar retail partners. The young founders were already one introduction away from a transformative relationship. “You have to meet my Target broker,” announced the woman founder and CEO of a certified B corp in the female personal care category. It was a flattering and exciting offer.
Sadie and Abby met the broker, pitched Target, and landed a new contract that caused oscillating bouts of jubilation and butterflies. They were kicking butt, BUT their young company was outside the risk limits of traditional lenders. How would they fund the contract? Fortunately, a banker they met knew to give us call.

Our Solution
We like to say, “We all do better when we all do better.” It’s a notion that’s foundational to how we approach our work and client relationships. So when we met the Bowler sisters and their father, Chris, who also advises them on business matters, it was a natural connection and collaboration.
Knowing the imposed timeline was critical, the Alterna team worked quickly to structure the funding and advance the capital. Although we helped the SadieB brand land on Target® shelves, we know the real impact is the intentional and incredible good that two young co-founders have brought to market.

“Such a supportive partner”
“We were finding it difficult to raise funds for a young CPG company in our region. But ACS had experience in the category and a funding option that fit our circumstances so well. They helped us meet our timelines, which were tight, for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shelf eight SKUs with Target. On launch day, ACS sent us an email of congratulations and have been such a supportive partner.”
